heh. shoulda given up reality tv for lent...
i watched prez bush's address to the nation this evening. i have to say i've been quite divided for a while over whether or not war is really the answer, and i still am...i mean, i do wholeheartedly believe that we shouldn't wait around for s.h. to attack our troops or surrounding countries before we attack him, and it makes sense to me that more time for iraq to disarm only gives s.h. an excuse to make more excuses and hide more of his stuff. and personally france's idea of diplomacy reminds me vaguely of the appeasement of hitler at the onset of wwii...but the humanitarian in me says that this feels much too rushed, that we're being hasty about a decision that could cost the lives of people worldwide, including americans, possibly on our soil...i mean, with the onset of war, are we really safe anymore? despite all the assurances and precautions, are we really ever safe? whose lives should we risk, those of our loyal troops in the middle east, or those of civilians on our own soil who are everything but sitting ducks for terrorist attacks? and also, while i do consider myself idealistic, at times ridiculously so, it's a little far-fetched that we could, if s.h. and his "big guns" are eliminated, turn iraq into a model of perfect democracy and human rights in a reasonable amount of time as g-dubya professed he would do. because you can change the government, you can put in democratic leaders, you can do whatever you want overnight, but to change the minds and spirits of a people so used to living under a dictatorship, even if they hated it...that takes a while, longer than i think some people anticipate.
that's enough of my political babbling for tonight. comment box is open! (hint hint...)
