you know what i'd like to start doing again? writing poetry. pouring my heart into a few words that somehow express exactly how i feel. the last decent poem i wrote i didn't share with anyone, maybe i could now... it's called "solo flight" and it was inspired by my four-hour long drive from southlake to austin on the day i moved here...
armed with a caramel frappuchino, a fast car
and a bittersweet smile, she drove away
thinking “just let me get out of this town
and i’ll be okay, i'll be fine...”
she’s got an itch she can’t scratch
until she hears her engine purring
and her tires carrying her into the horizon
she steers clear of memory lane
knowing it’s nothing but a dead end and tears
avoids the songs on the radio that
remind her of good times, good friends
lets herself get carried away by unfamiliar music
she may grow to like someday
but for now she’s just an eighteen year old girl
leaving town for the first time
forced to look at herself, the reflection
of a scared college freshman in her rear view mirror
and ask “who am i?” and "where am i going?"
as the car carries her away like a time machine
to her awaiting, newfound world...
